Bidding wars return to spring equipment auctions

Clean, well-maintained machines are drawing aggressive bids again — but tired equipment is sitting.

Spring auction season is showing a split personality. Clean, well-documented machines are drawing aggressive bidding and selling strong, while tired, high-hour equipment is sitting and going for less than sellers hoped.

Auctioneers say the divide reflects a more discerning buyer. With more inventory available than during the shortage years, bidders can afford to wait for the right machine and walk away from projects, salvage, and anything with a murky service history.

The lesson for sellers is consistent with what dealers are reporting: presentation and documentation move the needle. A power-wash, a tidy maintenance binder, and honest hour readings can mean the difference between a bidding war and a no-sale.

Watched two guys run a clean 5e way past dealer money last weekend. Junk three rows over got no bids.
